We wish to share our passion of music whether as singer, student, musician or listener

Brandon Briggs, San Leandro, California - Vocal Performance

Brandon attends CSU East Bay, studying voice and hoping to become a role model for other blind singers who wish to perform opera and musicals.  He tells a musical “story” persuasively with his bass voice, as well as his face and body. His audition piece from Sweeney Todd gave the scholarship panel goose bumps. His goal is to perform opera with aspirations toward Chicago, San Francisco, the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala.

Carl Oser, Novato, California – Vocal Performance

Carl, a magna cum laude graduate of University of Southern California, performs and teaches in Marin County, plays jazz and classical piano, arranges music and teaches youth master classes.  He has directed elementary school choirs, designed outreach musical programs, taught voice and jazz history in Ecuador and written a musical score for a Los Angeles high school.  He is interested in mastering the jazz idiom with the aim of teaching advanced students. Carl will apply his scholarship to voice lessons. He is the winner of the Carol Randall Award for Jazz or Musical Comedy.

Krista Cheng, San Francisco, California – Vocal Performance

Krista has studied at Lowell High School in San Francisco since her arrival from Hong Kong last year.  Her beautiful, clear soprano voice won honors for three successive years in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Krista believes music is the international language. Her favorite opera is Madame Butterfly.  Krista will continue to pursue her musical studies, which may lead to the performing stage.  She also sees her music as a way to help others, possibly as a music therapist.

Eric Ye, San Francisco, California – Composing

Eric, a senior at Lowell High School in San Francisco, composes music using a synthesizer. Eric won his second Mayflower scholarship with his haunting and beautiful audition piece, “In Skies We Meet.”  Earlier, his string arrangement of the piece had been performed by his high school orchestra.  Eric displays great advances in his music and transcription skills since his 2011 award. This scholarship will assist with piano lessons to enhance his musicianship.  Eric’s musical interests lie in the classical world.  He would love to compose music in the Baroque style because “It is perfect, orderly, complex and pure.”

The Mayflower Choral Society, parent organization of the Mayflower Chorus, offers scholarships to people from all walks of life who have exhibited a talent or strong interest in music and who want to increase their knowledge and/or develop their talent to its fullest potential.  Since 1993 scholarships have been granted in the categories of Vocal Performance, Arrangement/Composition and Choral Directing.
