2015 AWARD

Dr. Elmo (Elmo Shropshire, DVM)

Dr. Elmo

Best-known for recording   “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer,” with more than 11 million copies sold since 1979.  “Grandma” has many times been #1 on Billboard’s Chart, long since replacing Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” as America’s most requested Christmas carol.

It has reached the top of both liked and disliked lists.

In 1982, "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" became the most requested song in radio history!

Elmo is So Much More than the person who told us the saga of “Grandma…”

He relocated to the Bay area in 1968 & established his own Veterinary Hospital while pursuing  interests in Bluegrass Music and competitive running.

He was instrumental in promoting Blue Grass to the music scene of the Bay area.

From 1969 – 1971 Dr. Elmo hosted The Great San Francisco Bluegrass Experience on KSAY radio.

He recalls that:   “After a couple of years, we were first or second in the market.”

After the bluegrass program, Dr. Elmo hosted a veterinary call-in radio show for several years; all-the-while, he performed bluegrass music in the Bay area with his group “Wild Blue.”

A Lexington Kentucky native, (son and name-sake of a well-known Jockey) he broke and rode “Needles” who went on to win the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes!

Each December, radio stations across the country call Dr. Elmo for his Christmas commentary and on-air renditions of “that Grandma Song.”  A radio visit from Dr. Elmo has become part of the nation’s holiday tradition.

He has also worked with our 2012 Marin Arts Honoree, Rita Abrams, creating and recording over 20 albums of comedy songs.

As a competitive runner, Elmo, won a Gold Medal representing the USA 4 X 400 relay at the World Master’s Track & Field Championships in Brazil.
